Abstract

The early association of the classic “hybrid warfare” notion with the conduct of the Russian Federation during the Crimea crisis, in 2014, led to a conceptual mix of two different ways of waging war and, ultimately, to a wide confusion at NATO level. In this context, a paradox to be noted is that the idea of “hybrid warfare”, despite the amount of criticism received, has been mythicized to the point of dominating the international security debate. This contradiction, however, can be overcome by assuming that emphasizing hybridity is merely an expression of a vulnerability awareness: in the most likely scenarios, the Alliance could become strategically disadvantaged with respect to the Russian Federation.
