Abstract

World War I meant a turning point in the history of mankind and, most of all, of the Western world. The map of the Old Continent was deeply transformed. Political institutions, economy, society, thinking, etc., were severely marked by the consequences of that terrible conflict which brought a new international order. Those changes affected especially European armies and, in general, everything related to war and peace. Though officially neutral, Spain also suffered the consequences of the conflict. Spanish governments intensified their reformist plans in the military field, in a double front. The aim was, on the one hand, to modernize their armed forces and, on the other, to move forward in the creation of a Colonial Army in North Africa. The purpose of this article is to analyze some of the circumstances surrounding those consecutive projects, mainly from 1918 to 1920.
