Abstract

The Vatican document Informatione del Caualliero Antonio Shirleo che viene a Roma per Ambasciatore del Re di Persia, 1601 confirms and expands the information provided by Carlos Coloma de Saa twenty years later. A. Sherley was apprehended by the Spaniards in Holland. Taken to Brussels, he was rescued for a large sum of money. This document also reveals the “strange fortune” of his marriage to Frances Devereux. Following her husband’s imprisonment by Elizabeth I, she went mad and died shortly afterwards. When A. Sherley embarked on his maritime adventure he was already a widower. The letter that Paul V addressed to him in 1609 is a clear proof of his conversion to Catholicism.
