Low Countries and the Franche‑Comté joined the territories of Charles V when he received the Burgundian inheritance. Since then and, especially, since Philip II, they participate in the imperial military campaigns and those of the Hispanic Monarchy contributing with resources and men to the military mosaics that were the Spanish armies in the 16th and 17th centuries.
