Resumen

Morpho-sedimentary features resulting from a high magnitude flood on a wandering boulder-bed river allowed to characterise overflow patterns at different scales. Cartographic evidence shows that the channel widened its bars receding concave banks and overflowing the alluvial plain extensively depicting a similar image as the 1956 river pattern. Critical points for overflow occurrence were established, preferential flow waterways and paleochannels reoccupation. Straightened reaches and embankments favour central bars accretion downstream driving flow expansion and channel bifurcation and forcing bank erosion. The inefficiency of traditional defence structures is demonstrated as well as the need for floodplain management that considers the river morphodynamic behaviour together with the preservation of high intensity floodways, specially within climatic change adjustments.
