Abstract
After establishing the grounds for family protection policies on the basis of taking into account external factors arising from the family and its high social consideration, this article reviews the development and situation offamily protection in Spain both from a historical perspective and in comparison with other countries. Althrough the Franco regime tried to foment the traditionalfamily for political reasons, actual economic assistance for the Spanish family was limited at the end of the dictatorship. Furthermore, in its anxiety to break with Franco system the advent of democracy overlooked economic aid for the family, and this tended more towards welfare. The outcome of all this is that, comparedwith the other countries of the European Union, Spainoccupies one of the last positions with regard to theamount of family allowances, although there now appears to be an incipient tendency towards change in stateassistance to the family.
