Resumo

Some reflections are offered concerning how traditional communities can approach the problem of schooling, while combining cultural preservation and access to modern culture, primarily promoted by western schooling. The paper suggests that, as rationalism and scientific thinking are the makings of historical cultural mechanisms of instrumental and social mediationsboth different but similar to the mediational mechanisms within every culturean encounter is possible if schooling is designed from the culture itself and not from a supposed abstract model of universal a-cultural rationalism. This cultural design of schooling revalues the human aspects of non-individualistic culturesthe makings of a communitarian mindtraditionally neglected in the educational models of individualistic cultures. Finally, a cultural design of schooling based upon activity systems, rather than upon a-cultural abstract principles, is demanded.
