Abstract
This article analyzes Pi y Margall's position vis-á-vis the so-ca-lled «social question» within the context of the ideological trends of the second half of the 19* Century. The first section focuses on the question of the context, thus justifying the article's title. The second section examines the reasons why Pi payed so much atten-tion to the social problem, his idea of socialism and his views on the process of emancipation. Section three, finally, exposes chro-nologically Pi's approaches to these problems, and the short-term and long-term solutions he proposed.
