Abstract

This paper describes the Capillary Electrophoresis (CE) as an useful analytical technique for polymer characterization, paying special attention to the results obtained recently in our laboratory. Micellar Electrokinetic Chromatography (MEKC) was employed in the analysis of radical copolymerisation reactions of two different systems which incorporated 2-acrylamido-2-methylpropane sulfonic acid (AMPS) in their structure. Important information about conversion, chemical composition distribution and copolymer molecular weight was obtained. The characterization of the synthesis progress and the ionic copolymers composition was also studied by MEKC . Moreover, capillary electrophoresis instrumentation was used for monitoring electrical conductivity of the reaction products obtained at different copolimerization stages, giving great information about the copolymerisation mechanism.
