In this piece of work three main objectives are pursued. Firstly, to know what Mastery Learning (ML) consists of; secondly, to identify its degree of kindness and efficacy when compared to other systems and teaching models, and thirdly, to weigh up its pros and cons. Mastery Learning (ML) is due to Bloom (1968, 1976) and, as it is stated by Anderson and Block (1985), it embraces a number of theoretical and practical ideas about systematic individualised teaching, which assists students in those cases where they encounter learning difficulties, provides all the necessary time to acquire a skill and endows them with a defined criterion of what that skill implies. Based mainly on methodologies of synthesis (meta-analysis and meta-synthesis), it is concluded that for about three years ML has had no better competitor as a learning and teaching model. Finally, a few restrictions derived from its application and from the model itself are presented.
