Zusammenfassung

In the present study, the importance and meaning of National and European Identities are studied. Within the framework of the theory of personal values (Schwartz, 2001), European youngsters of the Check and Slovak Republics, Germany and Spain answered a questionnaire with questions on the relative importance of their national and European identities plus an abbreviated form of the PVQ of 22 personal values. Face to face interviews to a sub-sample of 42 young Spaniards also explore the meaning of European identity. Results of the survey show that European youngsters share similar personal values: National and European identity as values are of a moderate importance within the set of personal values. Nevertheless, their national identity is more important than their European identity. We find that both identities are related to the bipolar dimensions of self- promotion and conservation from the theory of personal values. Both social identities have a similar meaning but receive different importance. Face to face interviews to a sub-sample show convergent results on the meaning of European identity
