Abstract

The Late Pleistocene record is represented in the north-western Spanish coast by incomplete and disconnected outcrops. Twenty four of these have been studied in this paper, including series in the Atlantic margin as well as in the Cantabrian one. The study has determined the establishment of file lithostratigraphic units: The Basal Unit corresponds to chaotic debris at the foot of the cliffs; the Castro de Fazouro Fm. is interpreted as a palaeobeach, formed during the Last Interglacial period, Arnela and Nois Fms reflect the sedimentation during the last cooling period and the Moreiras Fm. corresponds to the pleniglacial and the starting of deglaciation. The Holocene is only represented by two outcrops of peat bogs in this sector of the coast. Finally, a reconstruction of the evolutionary trend is made.
