Abstract

In this article the first crinoid -Heviacrinus melendezi nov. gen. nov. sp.- found in the black shales of the Ordovician of Navas de Estena (Ciudad Real province, Spain) is described and figured. This is also the first locrinidae found so far identified in the lberian Peninsula. The good state of preservation of the fossil has permited a detailed anatomical and morphological description, with some taphonomic and functional inferences. The addition of Heviacrinus melendezi nov. gen. nov. sp. to the Ordovician fossil record of invertebrates represents a quantitative and qualitative improvement of the knowledge of the paleoassociations where this taxon is present, due to its characteristic life style and way to fix the substratum.
