Abstract

Objetive: To describe the epidemiological and cinical characteristics of H1V infection observed in the HIV Unit of the Infectious Diseases Service of the “Gómez Ulla” Central Military Hospital. Method: Prospective study (1986-1994) of 106 confirmed cases of 111V infection: 26 women (24.5%)and 80 men (75.5%) aged between 17 and 65 years. Quartely clinical-biological checks. Initial and final classiflcation of patients accor ding to the CDC-93 system. RSIGMA statistical analysis. Results: We have detected heterosexual contagion iii 27%, drug addiction 57% and horno sexuality 16%; 37% had less than 200 CD4/uL when admitted. During the study 44 patients de veloped AIDS criteria (14% due to tuberculosis); 21 died (20%) asid 36 left (34%). Conclusions: 111Vínfection is less frequent iii the military social asid family environment, with a lower incidence of tuberculosis. There is a grea ter proportion of women, heterosexual transmis sion asid asymptomatic patients than in other se ries publised.
