Abstract

A study is presented of the aetiology and results of freatment in a group of 76 cases of primitive malignant osseous tumours of different histological types. These cases have been colIected from our own center. There was a clear male preponderance in the majority of the different types of tumours, but the striking aetiological feature is the; very high proportion of long bone tumours of the limbs and specially of the lower limbs. We have studied these 76 cases in two series: The first one with 57 cases treated before 1973 and the second one from 1973 to 1978, with 19 cases. The results of the first serie were very poor compared with the reports of other authors. 'There was a close relation between these results and the long lapse of time between the first symptom and the surgical intervention. 30 of them have been treated by amputation or desarticulation with peroperatory biopsy. The best results have been obtained in those tumours of the upper limbs treated by desarticulation. In the second serie we have. lntroduced the adjuvant chemotherapy in 10 cases out of the 19 treated. the dIfferences In the results, compared with the first serie, were not statlstlcally valid, but best results have, been obtained when there was no evidence of metastasis at the beginning of the treatment.
