Abstract

The history of the teaching of chemistry at the Spanish university is summarized from the mid-nineteenth century to the present, based on the Moyano Law of 1857, which allowed the creation Faculties of Sciences with a section of chemistry, and birth of the Institución Libre de Enseñanza, which will influence in an important way until 1936. Other milestones are described, such as the creation of the Junta para la de Ampliación de Estudios e Investigaciones Científicas, the foundation of the National Institute of Physics and Chemistry (known as Rockefeller Institute), or the recent Bologna process, as well as a sketch of some of the outstanding teachers of the different periods.
