Abstract
Damascus steel is the name that Europeans gave to the material of which Muslim swords were made during the time of the Crusades. This hypereutectoid, has a high carbon content that exceeds in all the in some cases to 2,1 % by mass. The secret of its good mechanical characteristics lies in the processes of hot forging, in a range from of temperatures between 650 and 780 °C, to which it may be subjected. The fi-nal hardening in water, brine or other aqueous solutions, confers on weapons ma-nufactured with this steel a good resistance in its cutting edge and a high tenacity. In the present the manufacturing processes of this type of steel are studied from the point of view of the of an elaboration carried out by the authors following the artisan methods.
