Abstract

This study deals with the bond of “mayorazgo” (primogeniture) founded by the beneficiary cleric Juan Martínez Montero of the Parish of Santiago, this took place in the religious environment that dominated the Écija society in the 17th and 18th centuries. He was wealthy and had a chapel and vault of family burial “Montero” in the Nuestra Señora de Gracia. The base of the study has been, to a large extent, the documentation collected in the Archiepiscopal Archive of Seville and many village archives of the same area. New information of this family is offered for two centuries, especially the short ecclesiastical careers of their employers, provided and cast with the gutter goods of the chaplaincy as minor clerics, also named chaplains among clergymen of the city. Of great interest are the data of their marriages with families from Ecija and other nearby towns.
