The risks and consequences of childbirth are studied in 23,965 women who were assisted in the Maternity of the General University Hospital Gregorio Marañón, between the years 2013 and 2017. There were two accidental maternal deaths, one from Cerebral Gliomatosis and the other for grade IV Melanoma. Therefore, The Maternal Mortality Rate can be considered to be nil. Very serious pathologies appeared in 1,518 (6.33%) cases. Of these 1,448 (6.04%) fulfill the requirements defined by WHO as Potentially Fatal Disorders, and the other 70 (0.29%) met the criteria that this organization gives to women who were on the verge of death (near-miss calls). It is important to know that in practically all these cases, there was some previous pregnancy pathology, that is, that they were high-risk pregnancies. We classified as a serious pathology the cesarean section, which was performed in 4,215 (17.59%) women, and the perineal tears of grade 3 and 4, which occurred in 265 (1.1%) and 14 (0.05) cases respectively. Finally, we considered episiotomy and grade 1 and 2 tears as a mild pathology. They totaled 19,298 deliveries (80.47%). These are the risks a woman faces when wanting to be a mother in the 21st century.
