As a proxy for long-term lithospheric strength, the effective elastic thickness (Te) can be used to understand the relationship between lithospheric rheology and geodynamic evolution of complex tectonic settings. Here we investigate the lithospheric strength of the Iberian Peninsula in order to improve our knowledge of the regional variations of the rheology and long-term mechanical behavior of the lithosphere in the study area. For this we present, for the first time, a high-resolution map of spatial variations of Te in the Iberian Peninsula from the spectral analysis of the Bouguer coherence. We find that this region is characterized by low Te values (Te < 20 km), where the most noticeable feature is a band of moderate to high values over the central and southwestern Iberian Peninsula, which connect southward with the high Te values in the North Africa region.
