Abstract

Remarks on the management of the geological heritage locally derived from a failed geoconservation initiative of a geosite known as Miradero Fault (Toledo, Castile-La Mancha, Spain) is presented. The fault was exposed by the construction of an escalator. Useful lessons can be learnt from the fact that the inventories developed prior to project development were only partial and produced with other aims in mind, as well as from the lack of technical supervision of works affecting geological heritage. Similarly, the difficulties to find the right authority to process the application submitted by the authors of this paper, and the inexistent or unsatisfactory responses given by the competent authorities, are useful lessons in order to improve the protection of geological heritage in the future. Lastly, applying some standard procedures for the preservation of historical and artistic heritage and adapting them to the reality of the natural heritage was proven valuable, such as the consideration of relevant archaeological remains in construction projects and urban planning.
