Abstract

This study was undertaken with the aim of evaluating the effect of early photocoagulation in isolated diabetic macular edema with good visual acuity (1-2/3). This subject is under discussion (12, 14). The test of contrast sensitivity was used to measure «real-world» functional vision (15). We have selected 136 patients, 49 eyes with «clinlcallv significantn diabetic macular edema (30 were treated by argon laser and 19 were left as observation group). 54 eyes with «no clinically significant» diabetic macular edema (24 treated and 30 observation group). At the 6 month follow-ups, the contrast sensitivity improved in treated eyes compared to the observation group. During the period of follow-up, the changes for every frecuency (except for near 1 and 4) were statistically significant in eyes with «clinically significantn diabetic macular edema treated. On the other hand, these changes were not statistically significant in any frecuency for eyes with «clinically significant» diabetic macular edema not treated.
