Abstract
This article focuses on the conflicts surrounding the possession of ecclesiastical benefices by the ministers of the Inquisitions of Spain and Portugal. The Holy Office enjoyed a papal privilege allowing its members to receive benefice-related income without complying with the obligation of residence. This generated numerous conflicts, which were especially bitter in the case of doctoral canonries, since the founding briefs of their benefices estab- lished strict residence criteria for the canons. This paper analyzes the intervention of the Holy See, through the Congregation of the Holy Office, in the lawsuits that unfolded in Spain and Portugal between the Inquisitions and the cathedral chapters regarding breaches of the duty of residence in the doctoral canonries of the ministers of the Tribunals of Faith.
