Abstract
The paper considers musical genres as communicative saving mecha- . nisms. To sitúate a song within a genre implies limiting its possible meanings and identifying certain rhetorical procedures that créate a world of meaning proper to each genre. At the same time, each musical genre interacts within a trame in which social experience moves in accordance with the ideas expressed by the textual mechanism. I will analyse the relationship between social trame and musical genre through a San Francisco Jazz Festival publicity spot in which two different musical styles, hip hop and jazz, are associated with different forms of behavior. From the unión of these behaviors is born the meaning that each genre has at a particular moment in time.
