Abstract

Entrepreneurship is experiencing increasing social recognition, given its decidedly relevant role in driving economic growth. At the same time, academic research focused on these activities has expanded, as have training activities aimed at promoting them. This publication is the result of one of these initiatives, the Seminar on Entrepreneurship and Leadership (SEL) implemented at the Universidad Rey Juan Carlos (URJC) in collaboration with Obra Social La Caixa (the Foundation of Caixa Bank, the third Spanish bank in the activity ranking). The aim of the SEL is promoting entrepreneurship in higher education and boosting the development of entrepreneurial skills and competences in university students through innovative activities. As part of this project, we collaborated in the GUESSS 2018 Report. This report provides a diagnosis of the entrepreneurial spirit of students in the URJC, linked to an international initiative involving 54 countries and 3,000 universities. The data provided in this publication was obtained from 893 surveys given to students from the URJC, enrolled in studies in a heterogeneous set of disciplines. The main conclusions are that 57% of the students plan to start a business at the end of their studies, which is slightly lower than the overall fi gure for the international sample. Students have highlighted the importance of the context of entrepreneurship promotion, so the role of the university is decisive. Therefore, there is a need to improve specifi c training for the development of the necessary skills for entrepreneurs. The areas indicated by those surveyed as the object of entrepreneurship are basically those related to education, information technology, tourism and leisure. This report has highlighted the need to continue improving and expanding the mechanisms present in universities for the promotion and support of entrepreneurship.
