Abstract

Between 2008-2010, the island of Majorca experienced the coldest and wettest winters of the last 40 years. Accumulated rainfall was twice the average and values of intense rainfall up to 300 mm/24h were recorded. As a result, 34 mass-movements (landslides and rockfalls) were registered in the Tramuntana Range. Fortunately, there were no deaths but there were numerous cases of damage to dwellings, holiday apartments and especially the road network in the range, most significantly the numerous blockages on the main road for more than three months. Taking into account that the main source of income in Majorca is tourism (83% GDP), as it welcomes over 10 million visitors each year, this caused great concern. Total economic losses were valued at approximately 11M Euros. Substantial media coverage has been given, contributing to a greater awareness of the risk that these processes involve.
