Abstract

The main objective of this work is to evaluate the future sustainabi- lity of a territory in Spain Interior which is fighting against demographic down- turn, by way of its Grupo de Acción Local (ADI Záncara), and by way of calls for funding for the rural development of its LEADER Programme (2007-2020). The methodology employed for the realisation of this work is derived from quanti- tative socioeconomic and demographic analyses, combined with qualitative re- search. El Záncara, located in the southwestern part of the province of Cuenca, reveals a marked contrast between the north and south in terms of demogra- phics, economics, and demand for public services and infrastructure. In order to ensure intelligent territorial development, we must first identify different strategic variables, such as geographic position, regional identity and cohesion, accessibility of public services and infrastructure and, above all, unequal demographic downturn and an aging population. The study concludes by empha- sising the need to identify a solution for the most serious problem facing this region, that is, depopulation, in order to ensure a viable and sustainable future, by way of a range of innovative combined initiatives based on their agro-food quality system (Ajo Morado de Las Pedroñeras) and by way of the creation of tourism based on its rich natural and historical-artistic heritage. The applica- tion of the concept of Smart Territorial Development and the incorporation of these towns into the Smart Villages network has the potential to transform this region into an example of sustainable tourism.
