Resum
Seeds of the genus Ulex L. show a) an ovoid shape, b) a fleshy arile developed over an oblong hilum divided by a groove, and c) a rounded micropyle close to the radicular lobe. The testa is smooth and shiny at low magnification, while when observed by SEM exhibits a polygonal type mesh with thick and not very prominent cell walls. A typical section shows two layers. The outer layer is made up of palisade cells, while the inner layer is characterized by hour-glass cells. A section through the hilum shows a double palisade layer i.e. a palisade and a counter-palisade, the latter being derived from the funicle. Both layen become interrumpted at the mid-line, leaving the hilar groove, below which, a tracheid bar is developed. The size of seed and testa cells has proved to be a suitable variable to differentiate between related taxa.
