Abstract

A zeolite belonging to the submarine volcanic formation of La Palma, Canary lslands, is studied by means of microprobe analysis, optical microscopy, XR diffraction, differential thermal analysis, thermogravimetry and infrared spectroscopy. The analytical data confirm the identity of this zeolite as laumontite. Also, the mineral prehnite has been found. An activity diagram for three components (aSi04H4, aCa++ and aH+) in the temperature interval of 25-300ºC is constructed, showing the stability fields of heulandite, prehnite, laumontite, calcite and quartz. This diagram as well as that with the solubility of prehnite and laumontite allow us to estimate the formation conditions of both minerals of La Palma.
