Abstract
Estuarines are increasingly used for waste dischargue, aquaculture and recreation. Hence heavy metals entering the estuarine environment become a permanent risk for public health and water quality. The study reported here was undertaken with the objective of gaining an understanding of levels of heavy metals in the sediments of Besaya estuary (Cantabria). 34 samples analyzed for their mineralogical and geochemical composition show significant positive correlations between the following constituents (Cu, Pb, organic matter, etc.) the heavy metal pollution reaches a maximum at 7 cm sediment depth.
