Abstract

The bioeconomy is multifaceted. It needs a solid scientific and technical base and a dynamic and innovative agroindustrial fabric in order to quickly and effectively address any new challenges that arise. In addition, the bioeconomy is interdisciplinary and intersectoral, meaning it must interact with great number of social partners, at the local, regional, national and global scale. The success of the bioeconomy will depend, to a great extent, on its responses to the numerous moral questions, such as land use, water resource allocation, and sustainability of the biomass and ecosystems, as well as its impact and benefits. The challenges humanity faces are global, including food security, overpopulation, climate change, and new energy sources, and our response to these must be, too. It is necessary to reinforce bilateral and global dialogue to agree on a common agenda that will lead to coordinated action from the numerous countries which have developed bioeconomy strategies. To achieve the greatest possible impact, bioeconomy initiatives should be added to multilateral processes, such as the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. To do this, we urgently need to promote a «Biodiplomacy».
