Résumé

The present work aims to disseminate the phraseology used by a very representative writer of Spanish literature: Benito Pérez Galdós. To this end, this work focuses on one of his novels, namely Miau, which belongs to the so-called “Novelas españolas contemporáneas” [Contemporary Spanish Novels] by Galdós. Throughout the novel there are a large number of phraseological units which are characterised by the fact that they are, to a large extent, of normal and frequent use in the typical speech of Madrid at the time. The present study pays attention to the semiotic value and the use of phraseological units, as well as the typology of the phraseological units present in the first five chapters of the novel. In them, the existence of locutions and collocations is observed in contrast to the absence of paremias and routine formulas. It also highlights the expressive richness of the phraseological units mentioned together with their correct use at the right moment
