Abstract

Yields and nutritive quality of fodder pea (Pisum sativum x Pisum arvense) were studied under dryland Mediterranean conditions in a series of triáis sown in two years. Plots were harvested at three stages of increasing maturity. Yields were significantly affected (P < 0.01) by annual rainfall, the highest DM yields being obtained when plants were harvested at full pod formation (4845 Kg/Ha. in 1979-80 and 2615 Kg/Ha. in 1981-82). Chemical composition and predicted DM digestibility varied both between maturity stages and years. The quality of forage was high for the three cutting treatments; crude protein ranged between 16.6-22.5 % and predicted DM digestibility between 66.3-74.4 %.
