Résumé
The seismogenic nature o f the Alhama de Murcia fault has been proven for the Lorca-Totana segment although nothing is known about the potential rupture across segment boundaries. A paleoseismological study in the southernmost segment is going on to characterize its seismic potential. This includes a geomorphological analysis which detected some active faults and a paleoseismological study along one of them: the El Ruchete fault, which included the digging of four trenches. Two paleoearthquakes were detected: I) event Y younger than 540 yr AD, and 2) event X which occurred between 39 ka and 780 yr AD with a minimum M w of 6.38± 0.l. Event X can be correlated with the youngest event detected on the Lorca-Totana segment. Further studies are being performed to better characterize the segment behavior along this fault.
