Abstract

Plant conservation is still routinely neglected in conservation plans and receives limited attention, making it difficult to have an up-to-date knowledge of the threatened status of many plant species. To alleviate this situation arises the SICAF project (Save the Iberian & Canarian Flora): a citizen science project with the aim of creating a network of observers formed by citizens, naturalists and/or experts for collecting monitoring data of more than 1200 species of threatened vascular plants in Spain. For this, we used the iNaturalist citizen science platform, where we created two subprojects, Save the Iberian Flora (SIF) and Save the Canarian Flora (SACAF), and we updated the nomenclature and conservation status of all the threatened vascular flora of Spain. With SIF we register the species in the Iberian Peninsula and Balearic Islands, while with SACAF we register the species located in the Canary Islands. At the same time, to encourage citizen participation, we performed dissemination through different media. With all these actions together, we have created a dynamic network where everyone can actively participate in the collection and exchange of monitoring data, and provide updated and real-time information on the conservation status of plant populations. This information is very valuable when it comes to stopping the deterioration or disappearance of populations and species, which might allow the establishment and updating of conservation plans and threat categories with greater agility
