Abstract

This doctoral thesis addresses the key aspects of knowledge of textile heritage for its study, conservation and intervention. The research has focused, in the first place, on the analysis of the theoretical principles that serve as its foundation, from the texts and documents endorsed at an international level, the current regulations, as well as the classic authors and thinkers of this subject, to obtain a framework of reasoned criteria, applicable to the specific field of textile heritage, with its own entity, a fact that had not been contemplated until now. Next, and as a basic principle of knowledge, a detailed analysis of the matter and the construction technology has been carried out, through a classification procedure that unifies its study in the different textile typologies. In the same way, the conservative problem has been addressed, following a systematic and novel model, such as the identification of specific visual indicators of alteration associated with the causes that provoke them, both in the supports and in the applications. The intervention carried out on these assets has also been analyzed, from preventive and maintenance actions, establishing their procedures, to all those conservation and restoration actions, based on their specific criteria, as fundamental principles for choosing the specific operating method. and address its realization. A glossary of specific terms has been developed for all these subject areas, in order to have a common language that helps to correctly understand the concepts and therefore avoid interpretive confusion. Finally, all this information obtained has been standardized in a working method, which facilitates the study, diagnosis and intervention, in a systematic way, where, in addition to the organization of the content exposed in this research, it has been decisive for its completion, the exact definitions of the terms offered in the terminology glossary. This way of proceeding has materialized in a global knowledge documentary registration tool, whose evaluation, verified through its concrete application in a practical case, has demonstrated its usefulness, accessibility and effectiveness, for the better development of the conservation of textile heritage by part of the professionals who exercise it.
