The aim of this study is to account for the properties of proverbs starting with a zero article, both distributional and semantic. It is not arbitrary that many contemporary proverbs start with a nominal group with zero article in subject position and reject the variant with a generic definite article. On the other hand, such variations can be observed in diachrony.
