Abstract

A landscape artwork consists of a drawing or painting that is a subjective representation of a stretch of land seen from a single viewpoint. Indeed, the gaze creates the landscape and, reciprocally, acquires meaning from it; but “seeing” may also be taken to refer to other senses or to intelligence. What is more, the memory of what once was forms the landscape, which is, otherwise, often the fruit of human labor and of the process of shaping a social group and, therefore, has a historical and political significance. Nowadays, landscape is no longer merely contemplated and represented, it is conceived as something constructed, a place to intervene with a view to changing the viewer’s consciousness.
