Señores Académicos: Mis primeras palabras tienen que ser, por obligación y por devoción, de gratitud. Estoy aquí por el afecto de D. Juan Zaragüeta, que me propuso, y la benevolencia de todos ustedes, que me aceptaron. La honra que con ello me dan rebasa sin medida mis méritos, si tengo alguno. Aunque creo que sí, que alguno tengo, incluso tal vez dos. Tengo por mi primer mérito el ser un trabajador. Vengo de familia de campesinos y obreros, hechos y, a veces, deshechos en el trabajo. He sido obrero parte de mi vida. Luego, he cambiado el taller por el laboratorio y la biblioteca. Es igual: sigo siendo un trabajador. He trabajado mucho, y bien merece esto algún premio, aunque nunca hubiera imaginado uno tan alto. Mi segundo mérito, señores académicos, se lo debo a ustedes. No está mal que la Academia abra sus puertas a un sabio. Y aunque yo no lo era cuando ustedes me eligieron, al elegirme me pusieron en vías de serlo. ¿No decían Platón y Aristóteles, los viejos y eternos maestros, que el asombro es el principio de la sabiduría? Pues héme aquí, sabio o casi sabio, porque yo soy desde entonces, desde que supe que me habían elegido, el hombre más asombrado del planeta. Y lo soy tanto más si reparo en quienes me antecedieron en la Medalla de Académico que hoy se me otorga. Entre los más recientes figuran algunos de ancha fama pública, como el cardenal Gomá y Ramiro de Maeztu. Yo quiero celebrar brevemente la memoria de los dos más inmediatos: D. José Rogerio Sánchez, que fue mi maestro, y cuyo consejo y ayuda cordiales, abundantes y generosos nunca olvidaré, y -el P. Carro, a quien sucedo en la Academia y a quien quisiera suceder en la vida limpia y sencilla, en el estudio infatigable, en el brío para defender sus convicciones, en el amor encendido a España. Toda su obra es un análisis lúcido y fervoroso de la aportación española -Vitoria, los Soto- al derecho de las gentes y de las naciones. En ella se aprende a admirar, no se sabe cuál más, si la originalidad o la valentía de un pensamiento teológico jurídico que proclama, a la altura del siglo XVI, en una época de arrolladora vitalidad desmesurada la igualdad radical de todos los hombres, miembros todos de una misma Communitas naturales orbis; todos, indios o españoles, fieles o infieles, con los mismos derechos naturales, por encima o por debajo de las diferencias de raza, lengua, religión o cultura. Un pensamiento que, decididamente, no ha perdido actualidad. Vaya por ello a la memoria del P. Carro el testimonio de mi admiración y respeto.
