Abstract

Some examples of settlements, whose foundation was mainly conditioned by the natural availability of groundwater resources, can be found in the Madrid area. A great number of villages are located on the terrace system of the Jarama and Henares rivers, which are easily supplied from shallow wells OT springs associated to the edge of the terraces. Another case of similar characteristics are the village settlements on the edge of the so called "paramo" calcareous plains, where their water supply comes from the natural discharge of springs of some karstic aquifers. On the other hand, the relative easyness of enough groundwater supply in igneous and metamorphic rocks by means of shallow dugged wells has conditioned, among others not less important factors, the abundance of urbanizations and one-family houses in the Sierra of Madrid. Alter showing these case studies, some considerations are made about the control that this resource makes on land planning.
