Abstract

Among all competences in second language teaching, the speaking skill is regarded as one of the most subjectively assessed. Sometimes teachers envision it as the most controversial when deciding how to deal with it correctly (Pomposo, 2016). Given the lack of detail on that at the present time, this study aims to introduce five methodological criteria or indicators that may help assess in an effective way the oral competence of those students enrolled in the subject of English Applied to Tourism within the degree of Tourism at Universidad Complutense. To do so, a research and analysis process comprising 16 criteria from different authors (Barquero and Ureña, 2015; Palacios, 2016; and Pomposo, 2016) has been developed. These criteria have been studied by 5 university professors with experience in the teaching of English for specific purposes. They have analysed the points of coincidence between them, avoiding this way the repetition of ideas. The results obtained have contributed to the development of a more precise and objective guide where all aspects related to the speaking competence are included. The new assessment proposal consists of 5 criteria comprising all the previous ones, along with the new suggestions and opinions from the experts consulted.
