Abstract

The work proposes the critical study of a marble plaque from the ancient Roman colony of Falerii Novi (Italy) in honour of Gallienus (253-268) and his wife Salonina, ordered to be inscribed by the eques Tyrius Septimius Azizus between 264 and 265 ca. We will examine the epigraphic, morphological, palaeographic and prosopographic particularities of the plaque, and then focus on the historical analysis of the Roman colony of Falerii Novi as an essential enclave for the image and self-representation of Emperor Gallienus and his family in the Italian peninsula in the middle of the third century.
