Abstract

The body has been established as a key element through language and images. Appointing and representing ourselves has been our way of existing in the world for centuries. And also, our way ofdisappearing. Modesty and misogyny of 19th century distanced artists from the representation of their own bodies just because they did not have a penis. Due to the symbiosis produced between patriarchy and phallocentrism, considered as normativity, it was unavoidable that feminism turn vulvovaginalvindication into one of its most effective weapons. Some topics as sexuality, prostitution or rape have been inserted in visual narratives from which women were excluded for centuries. This paper proposes a reflection on how sexual revolution of the sixties and seventies would become the perfect context to resortto self-representation of their genitals in order to resignify twenty centuries of visual culture.
