Abstract

The human being has needed for many centuries to determine its position on Earth, in principle to navigate by boat, but today for many applications that use our precise location, from the browsers that inform us at every moment of the optimal way to reach our destination, to the applications offered by cinemas, restaurants and all kinds of establishments and resources closest to our position. In this article, which is a faithful transcript of the talk of the same title given by the author within the cycle of conferences of the 150th anniversary of the National Geographic Institute, the history of the procedures and techniques used by humanity to accurately know their position on the earth’s surface, a question that is not trivial to solve satisfactorily, especially if a result of high precision is needed.
