In the history of the cities of the kingdom of Castile, the reign of Alfonso XI (1312-1350) is usually identified with the introduction of the regidores system in the royal councils. But this reform of the organization of municipal governments took place especially in the final years of his reign (1345-1348) and it is usually interpreted as a manifestation of the interventionist character of the king.In this doctoral thesis we propose another approach, analyzing the measures that Alfonso XI took, from the very beginning of his effective government, starting in 1325. Thus it can be observed that, for almost twenty years, and with the background received from his grandmother María de Molina and the lawyers who were in his environment, Alfonso XI exercised the powers included in the concept of 'royal lordship', that is, those especially related to justice and royal incomes, in order to restore his authority and to improve the government in royal cities...
