Abstract

The starting point for this project is to understand what gender fluidity or gender-fluid means, and why this recentterm, which people choose to define their identity, is increasingly present in the fields of fashion and art. This research analyses how the concept of identity, and in particular that of gender, has evolved socially in the current cultural context and studies three interrelated aspects: the body, clothing and desire.This thesis structures the research in three parts. Part I establishes a dialogue between cultural patterns of gender that throughout history have been recognized in the world of fashion, and reformulates the constructed reality into one that is multiple, complex and flexible. It shows other expressions of gender such as: androgynous, effeminate, neutral, unisex, intergender, pangender, gender-fluid ..., and identifies the processes of subjectivation as non-linear and open systems in which people are in constant construction of themselves. These crossover systems can be rewritten, adapted, and altered over time to the changing cultural context.
