Resum

Cities, as ever-changing spaces throughout history, where different communities live, witness conflicts over how they should be built regarding their past and how coexistence unfolds. The aim of this PhD thesis is to research into and analyse ordinary disputes occurring in the Archaeological Heritage management of World Heritage cities and its role in urban societies, thus putting forward several proposals for improvement. Two cities, Alcalá de Henares (Spain) and Heroica Puebla de Zaragoza (Mexico), have been studied using a case study research design. It provides the opportunity to get in-depth and multifaceted insights about conflicts, which constitute a complex phenomenon of study. Drawing on the above-mentioned goal, this work seeks to identify and classify conflicts in this field and the stakeholders normally involved, to assess the procedures deployed to address these situations.
