Abstract

The Doctoral Thesis Spain - Italy: The construction of an identity by means of museums analyzes the processes of politicization of culture in general and of museums in particular,during the Nineteenth century. It delves into the methods applied by the government supporters, by means of the study of Spanish and Italian museum cases. In this way, it is understood how during the building of the Spanish and Italian National States in the Eigh thundreds, the purpose of the museums was to forge identity.The concepts and keys to be applied in the museological studies that make up the bulk of this investigation, fall within the historical, political, social and cultural contextof 19th century Spain and Italy. Likewise, the uses of the museum and the value of this institution during the century are theorized, taking into account its close relationship with the State. The ideologies of the Nationalisms that emerged at the time as driving forces of the creation of the nation permeated society through cultural policies. Their objective wasevident: to instil an identity for the definition of the towns.Cultural movements, state actions, historical-scientific studies and Nationalisms created a link that enabled the continuous modification of the national narrative depending on the needs of the time.
