Abstract

Since its discovery, the study of paleolithic rock art has focused on investigating various topics such as the represented figures, the relationship between the figures, the environment and the possible interpretations of the representations. However, for a long period of time, one of the elements that is now considered essential in the study of rock art, was systematically ignored. The concept of “parietal substrate” did not arouse enough interest to be researched until the end of the last century. Consequently, the study of the rock substrate, its importance and its use in rock art remains yet to be explored. In order to delve into this series of shortcomings in the existing research, this doctoral thesis has focused on the in-depth study of the use of the substrate in the decorated cavities of Asturias and Cantabria. With this aim, we established a series of specific objectives that seek to determine whether already known figures are more complete than previously believed to be when considering the use of the substrate, as well as finding patterns in the use of topographic elements in relation to the selected cavities, such as the type of figures / motifs represented and the chronological period in which they were inscribed...
