Abstract

Second Language Learning (SLL) is a profoundly holistic phenomenon where the influence of the mother tongue (L1) plays a fundamental role, even more if, as in the case of Portuguese and Spanish, linguistic proximity generates frequent phenomena of intercomprehension, facilitation, interference or fossilization and stabilization in different levels and aspects of the language. Furthermore, linguistic proximity is related to cultural proximity and strong cultural and historical links between the two communities of speakers. In this context, the main objective of this research is to identify and measure in which aspects the influence of the Portuguese language intervenes in the learning and use of the subjunctive verbal mode in Portuguese-speaking learners (European Portuguese). With the purpose of discovering which facilities and difficulties have a place in the learning of our study object, an exhaustive Contrastive Analysis (CA) of the subjunctive mode was carried out in both languages (European varieties); results are very similar in most syntactic contexts and locutions, except in some very specific structures.
